A short checklist before you move your money

Planning · 10 Jul 2026

BEFORE YOU TRANSFER Purpose + free date Emergency fund left alone Exit cost in real money Bonus end date Protection scheme named Then chase the rate

Comparison websites make it easy to chase the highest rate. Before you transfer money, pause and check the basics. Access and timing come first. The rate comes after.

For savings and fixed-term products

If you are dealing with a sum such as €50,000, it often helps to split it by purpose so one account is not asked to do every job.

  • I know what this money is for, and when I need it
  • My emergency savings are not part of this transfer
  • I understand the rate after any bonus ends
  • I know what early access would cost in real money
  • I know which deposit protection scheme covers the account

For investments

Confirm you will not need the money in a hurry. Check fees and whether the investment is spread across many holdings. Look at tax wrappers available where you live. Do not invest money you may have to sell quickly if markets fall.

Decide in advance what would make you sell for a good reason — a change in your goals, for example — so a falling price alone does not become the reason.

After you transfer

Keep the documents. Note end dates and bonus end dates in your calendar. When something renews, look again. Leaving everything on automatic renewal forever is how a good decision quietly becomes a poor one.

Final check: if you cannot explain the product simply to a friend or family member, you probably do not understand it well enough yet. Take more time. When you are ready, compare products with access and timing first.

Protected DEPOSIT PROTECTION
Eligible deposits are backed by a national scheme up to a published limit.
